Maid Cafes in the Philippines
A recently opened maid cafe in the Philippines was featured by TBS (Tokyo Broadcasting System) today. Maid cafes, an expanding industry in Japan, are a subcategory of cosplay restaurants where waitresses dressed in maid costumes act as servants and treat customers as masters in a private home.
Here is the translation of the news from TBS:
Recently, something familiar in Japan has opened in the Philippines.
Serving their "masters" in cosplay outfits are the maids of the Philippine-version maid cafe that opened in Manila.
Inside the restaurant, each customers are personally served meticulously. Bands that sing Japanese songs are also asked to perform [in the restaurant]. It seems to be getting popular as many people who hadn't heard of it are now visiting the restaurant together with the whole family.
The cafe owner says that maid cafes are suitable for Filipinos as Filipinos set a high value on service and hospitality.
"I guess that's what we all want once in a while after a busy day of work or busy day at school. We wanna just lay back and be served by your own servant."
"The servers are courteous. They are all pretty and are nice to talk to."
In the Philippines, cosplay is becoming popular and more than 10,000 people join locally held cosplay events. There were already maid cafes that temporarily opened in these cosplay events before but it's the first time that one actually opened for business.
